James Blake – Retrograde : Video Meaning + Lyrics

TLDR : The song is about the isolation in growing up, as is the video.

Something is crashing to the earth, an inevitability, that only the main character is aware – this represents reality.
The isolation metaphor is made apparent with the main character completely concealed in costume, a barrier between the they and the world.
The metaphor for isolation is only continued with the character riding a motor-cycle a vehicle that only accommodates one.
The protagonist enters a house that, clearly, is frozen in time.
This is the introduction of growing up, the other characters still appear to be at a prom.
A lack of progression in life.
There is one person in the video who notices the protagonist, but they are unable to communicate - reaffirming isolation.
At the end of the video, we discover that what from a distance, adulthood the inevitability, seemed catastrophic, but up close is hardly detrimental.

Verse 1:
You’re on your own, in a world you’ve grown
Few more years to go,
Don’t let the hurdle fall
So be the girl you loved,
Be the girl you loved

Chorus:
I’ll wait, so show me why you’re strong
Ignore everybody else,
We’re alone now
I’ll wait, so show me why you’re strong
Ignore everybody else,
We’re alone now

Verse 2:
Suddenly I’m hit
Is this darkness of the dawn
And your friends are gone
When you friends won’t come
So show me where you fit
So show me where you fit

Chorus:
I’ll wait, so show me why you’re strong
Ignore everybody else,
We’re alone now
We’re alone now
We’re alone now
I’ll wait
We’re alone now
We’re alone now
I’ll wait
We’re alone now
We’re alone now
We’re alone now
We’re alone now

Suddenly I’m hit
Is this darkness of the dawn
And your friends are gone
When you friends won’t come
So show me where you fit
So show me where you fit
